How to Prevent Plumbing Problems in Your House

Sometimes plumbing problems appear out of nowhere with a bang, while other times they start to show themselves slowly, over a period of time. However, before you call a plumber for a problem, you may first want to monitor the situation on your own, to see what you can do to prevent further damage. Some signs that you might need to consult with plumbers or else take action on your own include the toilet flushing a little bit slower than usual, or drains that are taking longer to dispose of water after a shower. Rumblings in the sink are also worth a look. See Read about San Diego Plumbers Services.

Your water heater is another area that requires consistent surveillance if you want to prevent plumbing problems within the home. Before you call in a plumber for every odd noise that comes from your heater, you should be sure to inspect it at least once a year. If there are any signs of rust or disrepair, it may be time to replace the whole unit. However, you could patch small cracks up on your own with the right tools, with no need to call the plumbers for more help. Some routine cleaning procedures can help keep plumbers away. You should schedule regular plumbing tasks, such as cleaning out drains and preventing larger clogs from building up in any pipes. It's all too easy to ignore a drain that you know is clogged as long as water goes down eventually. However, over time this blockage will grow and you will eventually need to call a plumber if you have not taken care of the problem earlier. With monthly cleaning of pipes like this, you can prevent the need for professional help. It only takes a few minutes to pour drain cleaner down the pipes and help clear these blockages.

Responsible homeowners will take the time to make these small plumbing tasks part of their regular cleaning routine. This will help keep the household running smoothly, without the assistance of plumbers. However, over time, it's inevitable that larger blockages or leaks might become a problem. You should be able to tell when there is a problem that should not be ignored, and that will need the assistance of a professional plumber to fix. For most small issues, however, all it takes is a bit of proper equipment, time and care to stay on top of your pipes and drains. Read more about flood damage Restoration San Diego.

Care for the Caregiver

With nearly half (53%) of all caregivers reporting a decline of health affecting their ability to provide care, it is important to keep the health of your caregiver in mind (NAC, 2006).

Caring for an aging loved one can be a testing experience. It can be difficult to slowly watch a family member lose their independence and often, their mental capacities. More often than not it is a middle aged family member who takes on the responsibility of being the primary caregiver for their parents. Without additional support, this caregiver can quickly find themselves overwhelmed and depressed. While many caregivers find themselves up for the challenge, others may find it more difficult to adjust to the constant demand of being a home care provider. In an effort to be there for the health of a loved one, many caregivers sacrifice theirs.

Stress and depression can come in many forms. Often, caregivers have to take a leave of absence from work, or they have to cut back their hours to be at home more often. As a result, both parties have to sacrifice and do without. The loss of monthly capital can lead to stress as it becomes harder to pay the monthly bills. Additionally, the loss of personal interactions with colleagues in the workplace can leave a caregiver feeling lonely. Managing one’s family can also be difficult and being a caregiver can also lead to stress in the marriage. Rather than sacrificing one’s health and family for the care of a family member, a caregiver must provide care for themselves first so they may be able to care for another.

There are various ways for a caregiver to stay positive during the time they spend caring for someone. Rather than feeling trapped, a caregiver should do their best to encourage social interactions for both themselves and their aging parents or patients. Dinner socials, poker/bridge nights, and birthday parties should all be encouraged to maintain a festive attitude throughout the home, and to avoid it from feeling like a prison. Maintaining the home clean can help keep good spirits and inviting visitors will give you a good reason to clean and to stay possitive. The caregiver should also make an effort to invite their family to these events to help maintain closeness and to promote family interaction during this time of change.

While maintaining social interactions can help a caregiver stay healthy, many others find success by turning inwards and focusing the time on improving themselves. Some may choose to take up a hobby or learning a new skill, while others may choose to begin an exercise regimen to improve their own health. This can be light to moderate exercise; just enough to get your blood pumping. Feel free to invite your aging family member to also get moving. Regardless of age, seniors can all benefit from staying active. Lastly, a caregiver should always have a dependable back-up such as, San Diego Home Care Provider-Constant Companions to help out when things get tough, and you need a break. BBB accredited business San Diego Home Care Blog The Cure for Depression in Seniors – Family Unity

We have all faced sadness in our lives, whether because of the death of a loved one, the break-up of a relationship, or having to part with something treasured. The normal emotional process of loss clearly involves pain, but also must involve recovery. Many of today’s elderly find it harder and harder to recuperate from a loss. Many seniors are left to deal with the pain by themselves, and do not have the access to those small things in life that help us to recuperate from emotional trauma. The communal constructs in today’s society simply do not encourage a healthy aging process. It is too common nowadays to find many seniors living alone. Since the industrial revolution, the American culture has encouraged fiscal growth for the individual, rather than family unity. Young men and women have not only moved out of the home they grew up in, but many times have also left the state or the country in search of their personal success. This has resulted in a society of abandoned parents and aging adults.

Growing up, most of us looked up to our parents as the most powerful force in our adolescent lives. It would be hard for many of us to consider our parents as possessing any weakness. This is why many do not even think twice before leaving their parents house and putting huge distances in between these relationships. However, as time passes and the visits and phone calls become less frequent, it becomes easier and easier to miss the signs of depression that an aging loved one may be facing.

As we age, it is inevitable to begin experiencing an increase of loss; the loss of motor skills, the loss of friends, the loss of a job, and the loss of our partners. The life of a senior can be full of loss when left alone with only their memories to keep them company. The balancing factors that would normally cure depression in the elderly, are no longer easily available. They often times do not have many friends in which to confide, and many no longer have their partners with which to share their pain. The only ones who can help, live hundreds of miles away, and they only see each other a few times each year. It is no wonder why many seniors claim to feel abandoned during their “golden years.”

The natural balance of life would normally allow a senior to age appropriately with a healthy emotional well being. The continual loss causing so much pain in their lives would be balanced by the new and fresh joys of life. Such things include watching their grandchildren take their first steps, watching them read their first words, and celebrating their children’s professional success. If we rob our aging population of such things, we can expect to see a rise in depression in seniors, and a lowered quality of life.

It is easy for a senior to be saddened and to become depressed. Perpetual sadness can lead to depression, and depression can lead to death. In order to combat depression, a well balanced environment must be provided for our seniors. Encourage them to participate in social events and to make new friends. Encourage them to learn new skills and to find a purpose in life, but most importantly, encourage family unity. Nothing will bring life to the face of a grandparent like a hug and kiss from a loving grandchild.

Family unity is one of the most effective ways of improving the health and outlook of an aging individual. However, promoting family unity can be difficult, depending on the circumstances, and you may need some help. Hiring a part time or full time in-home caregiver can help you deal with the stress of caring for an elderly person. Support from a caregiver can include help in cleaning, cooking, medication reminders, incontinence care, and general physical company. At Constant Companions, a San Diego Home Care company, we encourage family support for the elderly, but understand the demands of life often require you to seek assistance. In those instances, rest assured that we will be there for you.

House-Hunting iPhone App

Sawnuck, an online real-estate brokerage in Washington D.C., has created a free app for iPhone and iPad users. The app helps potential homebuyers navigate the San Diego real estate market. Users are able to “check in” to residential properties on the market, and leave notes, photos and videos on their visits. It comes from the same idea as the “Foursquare” application, where people can record visits to restaurants, bars and other places. The businesses often offer promotions for people who “check in” at their establishments and leave comments.

This innovative approach to house-hunting seems to be the natural progression. Today, most people begin their search at home on various listing websites, then go out and view the properties while taking notes. With the Sawbuck app, San Diego homebuyers can use one portable device to search tour, and collect data about homes. The app also allows users to “check in” on Twitter and Facebook, including friends and family in the decision process.

The Sawbuck app offers checklists to help people remember details; you can add photos or videos and rate each home. It also includes a GPS feature to guide you to each property. It has the ability to put you in contact with San Diego agents and set appointments. It has the capability of sorting the properties by price, location and type of property. It also has virtual tours of homes. Currently the app is only available for iPhone and iPad users, but there is a plan for an Android version of the app. The application is available at Apple’s app market.
